Candidate Biography

I am the author of The Corporate Insider's Guide to U.S. Patent Practice, and have been cited as an authority on intellectual property issues by the Wall Street Journal, Dow Jones, BNA, Bloomberg, Inside Counsel, Managing Intellectual Property, Technology Transfer Tactics, IP Law 360, JIPLP and other media and legal publications.

I have taken leadership roles as:

* a Board member on numerous organizations, including the New York Intellectual Property Law Association, closely held corporations, and non-profit institutions;

* a member of editorial boards for such prestigious organizations as the Journal of Intellectual Property Law and Practice (published by Oxford University Press) and the American Intellectual Property Law Associations Quarterly Journal.  

* co-chair of various committees for NYIPLA, and Federal Circuit Bar Association.

Candidate Q&A

What experience do you have working on or with a strategic Board of Directors?

I am a partner with management responsibility in a law firm, have been a board member at New York Intellectual Property Law Association (NYIPLA), a privately held regulated trust company, the board of education of my local religious institution,  as well as advised other boards.
 

Please include a brief description of your volunteer experiences within AUTM.

I have enjoyed working on presentations and conferences with AUTM, as well as the software committee.
 

Why do you want to join the AUTM Board of Directors?

I would like to get more involved with AUTM to further my knowledge and experience with the TTO community and foster more development of great innovations by Universities and Research Institutions.
 

Have you served in a volunteer leadership role for other organizations? If so, please explain.

I have been on Boards as noted above, co-chairs of Amicus Brief Committee (for many years) and PTAB Committee at NYIPLA, as well as Board Liaison for Inventor of Year Committee and Amicus Brief Committee at NYIPLA, co-chair of the Friedman Memorial Lecture Committee for the Federal Circuit Bar Association, and Editorial Board Member for AIPLA QJ and Oxford's JIPLAP.


If elected by the Membership to the Board, would you consider serving as Chair? Please explain.

Not at this time.  At this point, I want to get to know how this Board operates before taking on a more expanded role.  But I am excited to work hard for AUTM.
 

Please share personal strengths that you believe would be valuable to the AUTM Board and/or the strategic direction of the Association?

I bring experience and diversification of an outside counsel's experience who works with many TTOs and has great experience working with other organizations and industry contacts.


What special experience do you have in driving and implementing a strategic plan?

Through my leadership positions in my law firm, and in various organizations, as well as advisor to many startup and large organizations, I have been involved in making and implementing many strategic plans through my career.


How do terms of  the position (both responsibilities and time commitment) fit with your other responsibilities? Will you have any conflicts of commitment between your full-time position and your volunteer time on the AUTM Board?

I have confirmed with my law firm that I can commit the time to work with AUTM.

I am the child of immigrant from Latin America and native born American with Eastern European ancestors and represent that opportunity that the American dream brought to the next generation of immigrants.

I have enjoyed greatly helping AUTM bring opportunities and education programs to its members, and look forward to continuing that mission.
