We Want You for the AUTM Board of Directors
By Laura Savatski, AUTM Immediate Past Chair
It’s time again to consider a run for the AUTM Board of Directors. The newly elected Directors will begin their terms at the conclusion of AUTM’s 2023 Annual Meeting, Feb. 19-22, in Austin, TX.
My years on AUTM’s Board have been important ones for the development of my career. And, I encourage you to consider serving. Deepening professional relationships and the opportunity to develop stronger leadership skills are among the many benefits.
For the most part, Board Members work independently, reading AUTM staff-prepared documents and gathering data and feedback from their institutions and Association Members to prepare for Board meetings. It’s together as a Board that Directors make decisions to guide the work of the Association staff and volunteers. In addition to meeting in person three to four times a year, the Board also meets via Zoom as needed. You can learn more here.
Qualifying candidates for the Board should have proven expertise in any tech transfer discipline, defined in the broadest possible sense. You do not need to work at a not-for-profit research institute to serve. We seek candidates with diverse responsibilities, backgrounds, and experiences and value representation in all forms. Because the Board sets AUTM’s strategic direction and is a sounding board for issues impacting Members, it’s vital that our Board represents our diverse Membership
A few roles are currently especially needed to ensure this diverse set of voices so important in the board room. I want to especially encourage industry members, members newer to AUTM that still meet the required 5 year experience in the field requirement, members who well understand the public policy and advocacy landscape, and international members. We have a large number of seats open this year and this new board has important work ahead.
The AUTM Board sets strategic direction and goals for the Association, while ensuring the right mix of resources and people to get it done. A Board like ours, made up of volunteer Association Members, also acts as an initial sounding board on issues impacting individual Members. That’s why it’s key that our Board be representative of the Membership.
Candidates must be AUTM Members in good standing at the time of the election and have five years of professional experience relating to technology transfer. Ideally, you’ll have demonstrated a commitment to AUTM through volunteering on one of our many committees, SIGs, or other platforms.
