AUTM Releases 2024 Salary Survey: A Key Resource for Tech Transfer Professionals

AUTM has officially released its latest Salary Survey, offering an in-depth look at compensation trends and demographics within the technology transfer field. This year's survey, compiled from data submitted by more than 100 research institutions, provides detailed insights across 10 key tech transfer roles, positioning it as a valuable tool for both individuals seeking employment and institutions aiming to build effective teams.
The 2024 AUTM Salary Survey reveals several notable trends:
  • Gender Representation: Women constituted 52.6% of survey respondents. However, the data indicates that men continue to occupy the majority of leadership positions within the tech transfer sector.
  • Advancement for Women: While a disparity remains, there has been a positive shift, with women's representation in leadership roles increasing by 5% since the 2022 survey.
  • Salary Disparities: Median salaries were higher for men in 7 out of the 10 roles surveyed. Notably, the role of in-house counsel showed an exception, with women earning a 5% higher median salary.
  • Workforce Mobility: The survey highlights a dynamic job market, with 56% of tech transfer professionals currently in roles they have held for three years or less, suggesting significant movement within the profession.
  • Work Models: Hybrid work arrangements are widely offered and are more popular among professionals than fully remote positions.
  • Professional Certifications: During the hiring process, approximately 44% of institutions consider the Certified Licensing Professional (CLP) or Registered Technology
The 2024 Salary Survey features exciting upgrades to the way survey data is reported. The platform now offers historical data from the FY2022 survey for reference. For each position there's a new field asking how the position is funded. A new supplementary question asks survey takers if there are other positions that should be included.

Unlike traditional static reports, AUTM's Salary Survey is an interactive online platform. This allows users to filter data by various criteria, including role, experience level, and geographic region. The platform also features the ability to track changes in compensation over time, a crucial function for organizations developing long-term talent retention strategies.
