Shape the Future of Tech Transfer: Join AUTM's Board
Andrew Maas, JD, LLM, RTTP
Immediate Past Chair
AUTM Board of Directors
So far, 2025 has reminded us that uncertainty is part of our landscape as technology transfer professionals. My very first AUTM Board Meeting was in 2020 in San Diego where we had to make the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 Annual Meeting. The Board then had to focus on supporting our Members as we all navigated through the COVID epidemic. While COVID impacted the world, we are now in a unique environment where university research and technology commercialization activities are under more review.

But if there’s one thing technology transfer professionals are used to, it’s navigating challenges and turning them into opportunities. At AUTM, we’ve long embraced that mindset, evolving to support the professionals and innovations that change the world.
Our ability to grow and adapt isn't by chance. It's thanks to the strategic vision of dedicated members who serve on AUTM's Board of Directors. As we
open nominations for five seats on the 2026 Board, we’re looking for individuals who are ready to pivot, respond, and guide our Association through continued challenges.

Now I am the Immediate Past Chair, and I had the honor of serving during AUTM’s 50th Anniversary celebration throughout 2025 and the unique opportunity to reflect on the extraordinary impact of those who came before me. From flipping through the
Commemorative Book to exploring the
Leadership Library, it’s clear that AUTM’s strength lies in its people—passionate, visionary leaders who have helped steer this organization through growth, transformation, and impact.
Serving on the Board has been one of the most meaningful experiences of my professional life. I’ve learned from colleagues across the globe, strengthened leadership skills I use every day, and had a hand in making decisions that move our field forward. The personal growth and sense of purpose that comes with Board service is hard to overstate.
I also had the privilege to be part of creating AUTM’s
2025-2027 Strategic Plan, which included six strategic priorities:
- Support technology transfer and knowledge exchange globally
- Intentionally grow industry engagement
- Continually evolve programs and services
- Support career development across the career lifecycle
- Expand models for membership
- Improve advocacy for the technology transfer and knowledge exchange profession
To steward us through these ambition goals and continued challenges, and for this organization to remain a leader in tech transfer, AUTM must reflect the diverse expertise and perspectives of its membership—across geographies, institutions, and disciplines. Whether you’re from a large public university or a small research institute, whether you focus on licensing, startups, compliance, or policy—your voice matters.
To be eligible for the Board, candidates must be AUTM Members in good standing at the time of the election. If you’re ready for a new challenge and want more information, please
visit this page on the AUTM website.
We are accepting applications through September 30, and voting will open to AUTM Members October 13 – November 3. Plan to join us October 14 at 2 p.m. ET for the
Meet the Candidates watercooler. Results will be announced November 10, and the new board will be inducted during the 2026 AUTM Annual Meeting, February 8-11 in Seattle, Washington.
