This year marks a significant milestone for AUTM, celebrating its 50th anniversary, while our Committee proudly celebrates its 5th anniversary. Over these five years, we have dedicated ourselves to building a community where everyone belongs and feels valued for who they are. Our members have worked diligently to create practical tools, connection and mentoring opportunities, and thoughtful discussions that empower their colleagues and the inventors they collaborate with across various communities. For example, the committee has worked for the third time on the demographic survey to understand the membership and what we can do better to reflect our society. We also contribute monthly to the newsletters highlighting initiatives and experiences around the world. Additionally, we have provided a toolkit, watercoolers, and webinars on various topics to celebrate all groups and share insights on making the workplace more welcoming to everyone. Last but not least, we have partnered with several other AUTM committees to promote accessibility and inclusion for our fellow TT professionals.
The committee is deeply grateful the continuous support from AUTM leadership and members, from the beginning, now and in the future, to our work and initiatives.
And it is with great honor that I assume the role of chair of the Strategies for Competitive Innovation (SCI) Committee, affectionately pronounced as the “Sky” Committee, because the sky is the limit for innovation! We are following in the footsteps of esteemed leaders and mentors who have paved the way before me on this committee: Lisa Mueller, 2025 Board of Directors choice for the Volunteer of the Year Award; Karen Maples, a champion of women in science; Megan Aanstoos, a member of the AUTM Board of Directors, and welcoming Michael Invernale as the Chair-Elect.
But in these uncertain times, one might wonder what comes next.
As Lisa Mueller eloquently stated upon receiving the Volunteer Award of the Year, "In the face of adversity, we must double our efforts and get creative in our approach to amplify the voices of all.”
Our committee is taking a step forward to expand our mission and goals, starting with a new name to reflect these new challenges. Our mission has always been to make the TT profession more accessible and equitable for all communities. One of the key impacts of this goal is creating a competitive advantage for our organization by incorporating individuals from different backgrounds, each bringing unique perspectives and skills.
Studies have shown that organizations that embrace inclusivity outperform those that do not, driving innovation and ultimately helping to "make the world a better place."
Let’s not forget that this is an ongoing journey, and we should all continue to learn, grow, and take action; that what really matters is the difference each one of us can make in their environment. As Christopher Nobel, the recipient of the 2025 Chair's Award, said, let's keep our mission in sight, “our clear and guiding star.”
“Diversity Matters” by McKinsey & Company (2015, updated 2020) This McKinsey report found a strong correlation between diversity and financial performance. Companies in the top quartile for gender and ethnic diversity were more likely to have financial returns above their national industry medians. The updated 2020 report shows that diverse teams also excel in innovation and decision-making, helping organizations solve complex problems.
