AUTM Immediate Past Board Chair

Over the last few years, we have seen an increase in attention to the field of technology transfer and commercialization. With new funding through the NSF TIP Directorate such as NSF Regional Engines, Accelerating Research Translation (ART), Convergence Accelerator and through the U.S. Economic Development Administration Tech Hubs and more, it is evident that we need varying perspectives and expertise to help AUTM respond to policy, professional and funding changes.

We have made great strides as a Board. AUTM is increasingly being sought for policy advice, to design new training to meet the changing role of the Tech Transfer Office and to provide expert advice to agencies, organizations and international groups. We have seen an increased demand for training around artificial intelligence, leadership development and grant management, among other areas. This makes it critical for AUTM to have a Board with varying professional background and perspectives.

AUTM values the contributions and perspectives of its members, which is why we strongly encourage members to consider applying for the Board of Directors. It’s the best opportunity to help shape the future of the association, ensuring diverse perspectives. Review the Nomination and Election Policy for the eligibility criteria, as well as to understand the election process. The newly elected Directors will begin their terms at the conclusion of AUTM’s 2025 Annual Meeting, March 2-5.

Three years ago, I was fortunate to be elected by the members of this great association to serve on the AUTM Board. It has been an honor to contribute meaningfully at the highest level of the association, serving as chair of the Board. I have developed both personally and professionally, gained long-lasting friendships and professional collaborators, and I continue to mentor and be mentored by members of this association. My leadership skills have been strengthened, and I am energized by what we accomplished together. It is a wonderful opportunity to help with the strategic direction of an association that represents a profession that has grown tremendously over the last few years, and that is now highly regarded amongst other associations, international associations and institutions, federal agencies and legislatures.

As we make decisions to guide the work and future of the Association, we rely on the work of the AUTM staff, as well as dedicated volunteers to assist us in our decision making. In our strategic decision making, we try to consider as many perspectives as possible, and thus we need members from all backgrounds, experiences and tech transfer/knowledge transfer areas to join us. In-person Board meetings are held three times per year and virtually as needed.

To be eligible for the Board, candidates must be AUTM Members in good standing at the time of the election. We seek candidates with diverse responsibilities, backgrounds and experiences who value representation in all forms. Check out the Boardroom Perspectives Column in the Insight Newsletter for a range of topics and perspectives from current and past board members. You too have a unique perspective, and we need you at the table – Board table.

We have two seats open this year, and this new Board has important work ahead.
