The key findings of the 2024 US Survey:
- Total research funding topped $109B, with modest federal growth but a 5% drop in industry funding—offset by a 10% rise in alternative sources.
- Licensing staff declined by over 4%, and international patent filings pulled back, but invention disclosures rose—keeping the innovation pipeline strong.
- Gross licensing income fell 24%, and running royalties dropped 41%, while equity cash-outs rose 25% and other income jumped 34%, showing greater revenue diversification.
- Collaboration intensified, with inter-institutional agreements up 15% and related payments up 37%, underscoring deeper cross-institutional partnerships.
- Startups increased by 5%, and new products on the market rose 8%, reinforcing tech transfer’s continued economic and societal impact.

Canadian Survey — Key Findings
Amid a shifting research and innovation landscape, the AUTM 2024 Canadian Licensing Survey offers a timely snapshot of how tech transfer offices are responding to evolving priorities and pressures. Strong participation underscores the field’s commitment to transparency, benchmarking, and progress.
The key findings of the 2024 Canadian Survey:
- $8B (CAD) in research funding reported by 31 institutions—a 5.6% increase among consistent respondents—driven in part by a 15.4% rise in industry-sponsored research.
- Licensing staff grew by 3.5%, while overall staffing levels held steady, showing resilience amid broader institutional constraints.
- Patent activity declined, with U.S. issuances down 38%, but PCT filings rose 6.1%, suggesting a more strategic global IP approach.
- Gross licensing income climbed 13.5%, fuelled by gains in royalties and other revenue sources, despite a 45.2% drop in equity cash-outs.
- Startup formation dipped 14.5%, but most ventures remain rooted in their home province—demonstrating ongoing regional impact.
