Creating International Collaborations Through Outreach & Education

International cooperation is essential to address the challenges tech transfer continues to face. AUTM Staff and Board Members continue to be advocates for sharing knowledge and expertise with those throughout the innovation community.

Over the last month, AUTM representatives have been invited to participate in many opportunities to share their tech transfer knowledge across the globe.

In early May, AUTM staff and volunteers traveled to Cairo to lead the Egypt Technology Transfer Training Program. The program equips Egyptian professionals with essential skills in technology transfer, commercialization and innovation. This unique initiative blends online and in-person training with U.S. experts, fostering an exchange of best practices and cutting-edge knowledge.

The following week, the AUTM Board was well represented at ASTP where Chair Andy Maas was joined by Anji Miller and Almesha Campbell to participate in discussions around tech transfer.

Miller was invited to present two sessions during ASTP, the first on ensuring EDI best practices to enhance knowledge transfer in innovation ecosystems, and the second on increasing and accelerating the translation of research results into solutions in human healthcare.

Miller and Campbell also joined a panel moderated by AUTM Member Yatin Karpe on nurturing and enhancing the academic innovation culture, where the discussion focused on the indispensable role of enablers in fostering and advancing academic innovation through technology transfer from a global perspective.

Following ASTP, Maas traveled to the University Industry Innovation Network Conference (UIIN), where he met with UIIN CEO, Arno Meerman, discussed international collaboration opportunities between UIIN and AUTM including working together to support international partnerships and university engagement opportunities, as well as commercialization.

During the conference, Maas joined AUTM Member, Spencer Rogers, to present a workshop on Seven Practical Tips and Tools for Successful Technology Transfer. Topics discussed included assessing invention disclosures, timing licenses, identifying potential licensees, assessing readiness, negotiating and executing licenses, evaluating compliance, and ensuring ongoing adherence.

Maas also moderated a panel with Karpe and Rogers on nurturing collaborative innovation ecosystems to drive socio-economic progress and addressing global challenges. Through a global lens, they explored the intricate dynamics of nurturing these ecosystems. From sharing insights on successful strategies and best practices to discussing challenges and opportunities, the discussion illuminated the pivotal role each stakeholder plays in advancing innovation.
