Software, AI and Data Training Course
The 2025 Canadian Region Add-on Software, AI and Data Training Course will be a half-day session, where we will examine the nuances of AI and software licensing in the context of technology transfer within academic settings. The session will provide a solid foundation for young professionals while delving into advanced, practical insights to engage more experienced attendees. Challenges and opportunities unique to licensing AI-related innovations, including the integration of AI ethics, data ownership, and compliance with evolving regulatory frameworks, types of IP protections and what to protect/license will be explored.
Participants will be guided through key licensing models, the implications of open-source software in academic-industry collaborations, and best practices for managing IP portfolios in the rapidly evolving AI space. Case studies or examples of licensing AI and software originating from academic research, data exchange and international regulations – especially in cases where software is offered as a service and is cloud-based, important provisions in a software license compared to other technology licenses, and IP considerations will be essential to contextualize these discussions and highlight effective strategies. Additionally, the session should encourage interactive dialogue, allowing participants to share experiences, discuss hypothetical scenarios, and tackle complex licensing questions.
