The HVAC heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration industry, is responsible for about 15% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Part of this is from the use of refrigerants with high global warming potential. Carrier is committed to significantly reducing our greenhouse gas emissions through several sustainability goals including reducing their customers’ carbon emissions by one gigaton, 2.2 trillion pounds (about 997902400000 kg) of co2 equivalent between 2020 and 2030.

To achieve this and other ambitious goals, Carrier is investing in some key technologies: grid connectivity and energy management through algorithms and system controls to seamlessly integrate, optimize and ensure resiliency in their systems. They’re interested in clean energy systems, including batteries so that systems won't pull from the grid during peak hours.

They’re also looking at fuel cells in their transportation refrigeration systems and hydrogen power and the electrification of HVAC. Carrier is going to be transitioning away from gas furnaces and looking into electric heat pumps. Which uses batteries for transport refrigeration instead of diesel, and thermal storage, whether it's storing heat or cold.
