Survey FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

We’ve put together answers to help with the most commonly asked questions for the AUTM Salary Survey.

The database includes data from 121 research institutions on 10 of the most common tech transfer positions. The resulting database includes salary statistics as well as institutional characteristics (region, office size, remote work options, incentive compensation) and individual characteristics (educational degree, gender, experience, number of direct reports).
Of the 121 institutions that participated in the 2022 AUTM Salary Survey, 23 reported having an incentive compensation plan for their tech transfer employees. You can find a list of these institutions in the platform and create comparison groups of institutions that do or do not offer incentive plans. Survey data on reasons for having/not having an incentive plan, plan types, maximums and minimums, eligible positions and performance metrics used to determine compensation can also be found in the Downloads section of the platform.
Participating institutions were asked if their office permitted employees to be primarily remote, hybrid or primarily in person (multiple answers were allowed). Primarily remote refers to working out of the office most of the time with occasional visits to the office for meetings. Hybrid refers to regularly spending some time working in the office and some time working out of the office every week. Primarily in person refers to working in the office most of the time, with occasional remote work days. In the database platform, you can create comparison groups made up of the institutions that offer each of these three options, or a combination.
Yes. Rather than the Salary Survey data being presented as a static report (PDF), you now have access to a user-friendly database that will allow you to create your own custom reports based on the positions and variables that matter most to you.
Protecting the privacy of your institution’s data—and preventing specific salary information from being accessed inappropriately—is something we take very seriously. That’s why the database platform’s default settings allow only those people who submitted Salary Survey data to see their own institution’s data when viewing reports. The majority of subscribers will only see aggregated data for the institutions within the comparison group they select. You can find examples of Salary Survey reports here: https://www.autm.net/AUTM/media/About-AUTM/Documents/Examples-of-AUTM-Salary-Survey-Reports.pdf
Because staffing challenges may differ for specific positions and types of institutions, tech transfer offices will find value in being able to create custom searches within the AUTM Salary Survey database for benchmarking against similar organizations.

Yes! Institutions that participated in the Salary Survey are eligible to purchase a subscription to the Salary Survey database for $100. Your institution’s subscription covers free access to most of the features within the Salary Survey database for anyone in your office. It’s possible you might want another person at your institution to be able to see the same data that you see within the database. For that to happen, you will need to give AUTM permission to expand that person’s database access. If you would like to give permission to another person, please email Jordana Bieze Foster. Make sure to include the other person’s name and email address. You will be asked to confirm your approval at least once more before the other person’s access is expanded.
Check to be sure you are logged in to your AUTM account. If that doesn’t help, contact Jordana Bieze Foster.
