Benefits of Running

Considering a run for AUTM’s Board of Directors?

Terrific! Here are some things you should know...
AUTM election season is upon us! This year, two new Members will be elected to the AUTM Board.
Apply Here!
We want every AUTM Member who qualifies to consider throwing their hat into the ring. Our Board benefits from diverse candidates and your unique perspective. You will gain valuable skills and grow your network while helping to shape the future of AUTM and the tech transfer profession. We encourage you to apply now!
Serving on AUTM’s Board of Directors is an opportunity to share your skills and expertise, and have a positive, lasting impact on technology transfer. If you’re passionate about AUTM’s mission — supporting and advancing technology transfer worldwide — serving is an outstanding way to give back by helping chart the future of our profession.
By serving on AUTM’s Board, you’ll engage in high-level discussions about the future of AUTM and the profession. You’ll be a key player engaged in shaping the Association’s strategic goals and the future of tech transfer.
Nonprofit leadership experience offers a chance to grow beyond the skills used during your day job and bring your unique skills to AUTM. As a Director, you’ll contribute to the governance of the Association. You’ll have the opportunity to engage with AUTM staff and Cabinet members who drive Association operations. Make no mistake, there will conflict, lively debates and fascinating discussions. Working with others and considering multiple points of view will sharpen your diplomacy and negotiating skills and broaden your horizon. And in the process, you'll expand and diversify your network of influencers and contacts.
Serving AUTM in a leadership position will help you advance professionally. In the academic and corporate world, one of the key attributes senior leaders look for when considering hiring or promoting people is experience serving the community. Businesses and universities want to be good corporate citizens through the activities of their employees, and they understand the value of skills learned by professionals who serve on nonprofit boards.
The AUTM Board meets in person three times a year (including once at the AUTM Annual Meeting location, which can be anywhere in the US). Except for the Annual Meeting, the in-person Board meetings last two days. There are additional 2-hour video calls scheduled on months where there are no in-person meetings and occasional impromptu short board meetings to vote on time-sensitive important actions. Directors are expected to attend all meetings. A level of preparation is required before the Board meetings and you may get involved in specific task groups as the need arises.

Based on the AUTM Bylaws, at the time of application for candidacy and during your term you have to be a regular Member or an emeritus Member to serve on the Board of Directors.

Yes! All of the vacancies are open to US or non-US members.

No.  You can be an administrator, director, fellow, or have any position in the industry to apply, as long as your membership with AUTM is either a regular Member or an emeritus Member. AUTM's Board of Directors enjoys the diversity of thought and point of view to better serve the mission of the organization.
